Are there perfect wines to go with watching sports on television? Well, there should be!

Glasses of beer and wine with football and fries

The perfect pair!

Drinking wine and watching sports!

Wait! What?

If watching sports on TV and drinking wine are not the perfect pair, it definitely should be!

Most people think beer.

If you come to our home, we have a tremendous selection of beer.

We even keep a small refrigerator for just beer. Long story.

I will not be drinking this beer.

Help yourself. Seriously.

I do not like beer. I’ve tried.

Aha, you may say! This is why you have a wine blog.

Well, it is clearly why I don’t have a beer blog.

I have a wine blog because I love finding like minded wine fans so I can share the love, so to speak.

If they also drink beer, I don’t judge.

Here are some candidates for perfect wines to go with watching sports on TV:

(Admittedly that is a long title. Just go with it. Also, I am writing this when it is all things Super Bowl in the United States. This post will apply to most types of sporting events. You know, the kind with a ball. )

Under no circumstances should you be “that guy” who shows up and announces that they don’t drink beer and want a Chardonnay. If you want something specific, bring it with you and share.

If it is a long game, whatever it is (be honest, what televised sporting events are short?), go with lower alcohol. Go lower cost too, because why not? This is not wine tasting time.

two bottles of wine

These two are slightly sweet. Gewürztraminer being the sweeter of the two. Both really good.

Sweeter wines will go better with spicy things. Oh, and you can get these at Trader Joe’s wines for under $7.00.

Dry Riesling is a good choice whether or not it is from Trader Joe’s. So is Gewürztraminer but it may be harder to find

A Rosé is also a fun choice. This one is delicious as well.

Notice the same name as above. Yep, Trader Joe’s for not that much money. Remember, you should share. You may end up with a wine convert.

Sparkling Rosé for the Win! Beautiful bottle and really fun wine.

Shockingly enough, this too can be found at Trader Joe’s. Share, people, share.

Welcome to Cava! The Champagne of Spain. Well, the sparkling wine of Spain but not allowed to be called Champagne because it isn’t made there.

I recommend Cava a lot. And I mean a lot. It is reasonably priced, reliable, and made the same way Champagne is. Prosecco can’t say that! Nope .

Cava, whether Freixenet or not, is a great choice for watching sports. Trust me on this. No downside.

This is also a Cava!

This one is also from Trader Joe’s. I put it in after the Freixenet so you would know that this is not an all Trader Joe’s wine demonstration.

If everyone is walking around with a can of beer and you feel left out, canned wine is actually a good option.

I have tried some of these, as well as canned wine spritzers, at wine tastings. They were really surprisingly good. If you like these wines in a glass, then they should be good in a can. Wine that is ugh, though, will be ugh everywhere.

These were next to the cans of wine at the store, and would be an interesting option.

However, they are not low alcohol and I don’t do a liquor blog. Just mentioning non beer options.

There are a ton of articles these days about what wine to drink with a jalapeno popper or nachos or pizza.

WHY?

Watching sports on television is not the time to match the wine with the food, but match it with the event.

It also depends where you are watching.

If you are at my house, it is relaxing and fun. I don’t take it seriously. I will drink from one of the wines on My Top 20 insanely delicious wines from the wine gallery. Check them out if you want. I’ll share. As you saw, I also always have beer available.

Wherever you are:

Find something to celebrate! Everything goes with popcorn, by the way.

Whatever you are drinking, have fun!

Word FUN spelled out in lights

Yep! That’s the idea.
