The top 5 fun ways to celebrate Global Drink Wine Day!

Drinking wine in a vineyard is one of the best ways to celebrate this day!

Let’s hear it for Global Drink Wine Day!

How great is it that there is a drink wine day!

Let’s talk about this.

Global Drink Wine Day is February 18th for those not in the know. So let’s get on it!

For me almost every day is drink wine day. I had never heard about drink wine day until recently. I have clearly been missing out. This is a drinking wine community.

We just finished with the football season where beer seems to rule the day. In fact, I wrote two posts about what wines to drink when everyone else is drinking beer. Check them out here and here.

I could have been getting ready for wine days! There are more than 20 of these drink wine days. Seriously!

These “official” drink wine days are clearly not set in stone. Different web sites have different wines or have them on different days. Clearly there are so many ways to celebrate and appreciate wine.

A sampling of them are:

  • Open that Bottle Night (February 25) I only saw this on one website so far, but why not?

  • National Mulled Wine Day (March 3) Hmm. Many web sites have this one, but I’m not celebrating it.

  • International Syrah (Shiraz in Australia) Day -February 16th in the Northern Hemisphere, July 28th in the Southern

  • International Riesling Day

  • International Chardonnay Day

  • International Malbec Day

  • International Sauvignon Blanc Day

  • National (also International) Pinot Noir Day

  • National Red Wine Day (Hmm. Rather generic since almost every red wine gets their own day)

  • National White Wine Day (another rather generic one, but no downside in celebrating it)

  • National Wine Day (seriously generic, but never pass up a fun celebration)

  • National Zinfandel Day

  • National Cabernet Franc Day

  • International Cabernet Day ( General Day for all things Cabernet?)

  • National Wine and Cheese Day

  • National Champagne Day

I could go on and on. But I won’t.

There is no end of ways to have fun and celebrate wine! You even could make up your own! Why not?

As promised, let’s discuss the five best ways to do this! Obviously I will come up with so many more for the upcoming individual days.

In no particular order:

#1 Have wine at a winery or vineyard in wine country.

This is the gold standard for appreciating wine. I have had multiple posts on just this. Too many to link to, so look around the website if you are so inclined. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Most people are not lucky enough to live in wine country, or be able to just drop by. It’s a built in wine appreciation community. Let’s look at this suggestion as aspirational. Make plans to go.

Try to have a tasting and tour while there. The dream is to have a meal in the vineyard.

#2 Go to a wine bar and order wine flights.

This is an example of a small wine flight.

All the tastes are poured at once and you can keep comparing.

The best way to find out what wines you prefer is to compare. A flight of wine can be all the same type of grape or all different. When comparing, sometimes a real preference becomes easier. Often, we lack the vocabulary to describe a wine, and strange wine notes that are provided don’t really help. Just tried a wine today that mentioned it had notes of blackberry and olive tapenade. How does that help?

If you can compare a flight of wine with different foods, even better. Some foods make an incredible difference with wines. Have fun with it.

#3 Pick out a fun new wine and share it with a friend.

This wine has a great label and has a delicious wine within.

The wine is La Cuadrilla bottled by Stolpman Vineyards. If you can find it, buy it. It has a great back story. A real one.

Go to a wine store and buy a wine you’ve often thought of trying. If you’re basing the choice only on the beauty of the wine label, don’t spend a lot of money. Pretty labels don’t always translate to delicious wine. Have fun choosing.

While drinking the wine, share the heartfelt story of how Global Drink Day began.

Ok. There is no heartfelt story. You could make it up should you want to, but it was created for social media. There is a hash tag for each wine day. By the way, for Global Drink Wine Day, it is #DrinkWineDay.

Even with no great back story, I love the idea of celebrating wine on different days.

#4 Try to learn one new thing about wine.

There is no need to sign up for formal certification for this fun day. Learning one new thing that adds to your appreciation of wine should make a difference.

#5 Watch a wine movie, while drinking wine of course

If you haven’t seen any of the Somm movies, definitely watch one. There are three so far, and you get an incredible view of the process behind becoming a serious wine professional. These individuals are extremely dedicated and talented.

Sour grapes is a great movie about fraud in the wine industry. It also pointed out that many professionals could not taste that wines were fake.

Sideways was very popular when it came out in 2004, but it was not a favorite of mine. If you are a Paul Giamatti fan, you may really enjoy it. If you are a fan of Merlot, this is not the movie for you. His character did not like Merlot at all, and the popularity of the movie depressed Merlot sales for quite a while. That is quite troubling to me.

Bottle Shock is a great movie about the Judgment of Paris. In brief, it was about a 1976 formal blind taste test in Paris, and the California wines won. It was incredibly shocking at the time and really put California wines on the map.

Actually, wait to see that movie until May 24th. Yep! It’s the celebration of the Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris Day.

If you can come up with other ways to celebrate Global Drink Wine Day, great. Have fun with it! Wine should be enjoyed, and even better with friends and fellow wine enthusiasts.

GO FOR IT!!
