Two bottles Chilean red wine from Trader Joe's

Welcome to these fantastic wines from Chile!!

I can’t seem to stop talking about Trader Joe’s wines!

Why?

The value of these wines is UNMATCHED!

If you’ve read some of my other posts, you will know that there is NO Trader Joe’s wine store near me any more. Not even close.

When you have no Trader Joe’s wine stores near you!

You stock up big time when you do find one!

The two wines that I am shining a spotlight on are in that cart! I will write about some of the others when I get to them. Stay tuned…

Let’s get back to these two wines.

Panilonco Carménère wine from Trader Joe's

Delicious wine number 1!

Meet the Carménère wine from Panilonco. It is produced in Chile by Viña Marchigüe.

Panilonco Merlot-Malbec wine from Trader Joe's

Delicious wine number 2!

Here you can meet the Merlot-Malbec red blend from the same producer. Also from Chile.

Here’s the shocker:

They are each only $4.99!!!!!

Mr Potato head with bulging eyes

IT’S TRUE!!

That’s only 4.70 Euro!

That’s why I say the value at Trader Joe’s is unmatched! These are shockingly good wines.

I say shockingly, because no wine should be that good at that price point!

There are many people who would dismiss this wine because of the price.

Don’t be those people!

Be the person who says, “WOW! This is Delicious! I can’t believe I can enjoy this insanely good wine for this amount of money! “

Let’s learn stuff about these wines!

Let’s talk about the grape types.

First up- Carménère

Great story behind the Carménère grape. First of all it is a red grape, just in case you didn’t know. It was also originally from France. From Bordeaux specifically.

Yep, this grape was one of the original six grape varieties allowed in Bordeaux to make those famous expensive wine blends. Just so you know, the other 5 grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

I write a lot about red blends. Some of the finest wines and the best values are red blends. Want to know more?

Check out my post: How do I find the best red blend wines that aren’t Bordeaux?

Carménère is rarely grown in France anymore.

Ooh! What happened?

The Phylloxera epidemic of the 1860’s destroyed the vineyards in France.

OH NO! It was bad. Read all about it! Elsewhere. Not getting into it here. Trust me, though. It was big. And bad.

Carménère was really affected by this. When it came time to plant grapes again, grapes that were more hearty were chosen.

Also, the climate in Bordeaux was not the best for Carménère. Who has fantastic climate for these grapes? Yep, Chile.

The grape type is a relative of Cabernet. A lot of these grapes are cousins of some sort or another. In fact, when Carménère cuttings were first brought to Chile, they were thought to be Merlot. Oops!

Wines made from Carménère are usually the Goldilocks of wine - not too tannic, not too high in alcohol, not too acidic. Just a fun delicious wine that is usually not too expensive. And if you buy this delicious wine at Trader Joe’s for $4.99 you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT GO WRONG!!

On to Malbec and Merlot!

Malbec and Merlot are better known than Carménère. Each of these red grapes can be made into a delicious wine on its own. Together they are often even better. As mentioned above, they are both allowed to be made into Bordeaux wine. They play well together.

This is Chile, though and not France. Much better value! The combination of Malbec and Merlot in this wine is fantastic. The back of the bottle uses vague phrases like “ripe fruit flavours” and”rich blackberry notes.” Just know that it is delicious. Again, it costs only$4.99!

That is insane!

These wines may be available at wine stores other than Trader Joe’s. It’s a possibility. If you don’t have easy access to Trader Joe’s wines, you can certainly see if they are available elsewhere. Totally worth it!

If you can’t find these wines, look to Chile for some other delicious wines. They are a great value wherever you shop.

Enjoy!
